Exactly What to Consider When Picking Your Elopement Officiant

Great news! Planning an elopement doesn’t have to be a stressful, daunting, scary process. We would even argue it can be an amazing, exciting, fun process! At Elope Studios, we’re totally down to help you plan every part of your elopement, right down to picking your officiant.

Here’s the thing: It kind of does matter who you choose. Your officiant can make or break your elopement, depending on how well they jive with your “whole deal.” You’ll want to pick someone who shares an understanding of your idea of love and what “forever” really means.

Our biggest piece of advice is this: the more you talk to your officiant, the better. Here are a few other things to ask yourself when making your decision.

What is the most important thing to me about my officiant?

Do you want them to be funny? Do you want them to be religious? Do you want them to improvise, or stay on script? The person you pick will literally be running your elopement show, so make sure it's going to be a show you'd actually want to see.

What is the most important thing to me about marriage?

Whatever you decide is your biggest elopement "thing", vocalize it to your officiant. Make sure it’s something they can get on board with and incorporate into your ceremony. This way, your big day will be super personalized and make actual marriage much more real for you and your partner.

How long do I want my ceremony to be?

If you want a short, snappy, to-the-point ceremony, make sure you pick someone who can reign in the theatrics. The last thing you want is to be standing in front of your forever person wishing you could “get this thing over with.”

Likewise, if you’re looking for someone who can really lean into a good love story, make sure you find someone who seems comfortable improvising, ad-libbing, and can hold an “audience”’s attention.

Do I like this person?

This might seem obvious, but you wouldn’t believe how many people pick an officiant they think they’re supposed to go with rather than someone they actually enjoy…ya know, like, as a person. Picking someone you get along with will make for a comfortable, positive elopement and ensure you’re surrounded by people who truly care about you.
